Our ever-popular Friday Talk is held on the second Friday of January, March, May, July, September and November. A cornerstone event for u3aSEL, it ticks many boxes: we have the chance to listen to and talk with an interesting external speaker drawn from the arts, business, the charity sector and academia. Members from all our different interest groups can meet and mingle socially over refreshments before the talk; members can also bring a guest which we hope will encourage the guest to join. After the talk, we invite recently joined members to meet the Committee and other new members over a slice of home-made cake.
Meetings are held in the Bowls Pavilion unless otherwise stated in the event details.
The talk on Friday 10th July by Dr Martin Compton was an informative journey through the world of AI, showing what can be achieved using different AI tools. From concise summaries of text, to bringing old photographs to life and composing and playing tunes, the range of features is enormous. However there are also dangers of misuse, both in a criminal way, by social media users becoming addicted and by students using AI rather too much.
For those who attended, and it was one of the largest attendances at a Friday talk, Dr Compton has agreed that we can make his presentation available at this link, note the media files will not work so it will make more sense to people who were at the meeting.
