Friday Talk - Dr Stella Butler, Breaking the glass ceiling of science: the first eleven women to become Fellows of the Royal Society 1945-1954

Start off your New Year with a talk about eleven incredible women pioneers who broke the glass ceiling in Science. Bring a friend as we welcome guests to our Friday talks.

Dr Butler’s book on this subject was published by the History press last month. Her Q and A blog can be found on this link https://thehistorypress.co.uk/article/ask-the-author-breaking-the-glass-ceiling-of-science/.

She will bring some of the books along and has promised a discounted price.

Dr Butler is Librarian Emeritus at the University of Leeds. She studied history of science at the University of Manchester in the late 1970s before a career in museums and libraries. Between 2011 and 2020 she was University Librarian and Keeper of the Brotherton Collection at the University of Leeds. She was Honorary Research Fellow in the History of Science at University College London between 2021 and 2025. Stella is currently a trustee of the Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust.

The talk will be in the Bowls Room at Horn Park sports club (aka Old Colfeians) which is on Eltham Road SE12 8UE. Buses 321, 178 and 122 stop outside (Weigall Road stop) and the SL4, 202 and 261 have stops at Lee Green, about 7 minutes’ walk from the venue. There is a large car park at the venue.

We aim to serve refreshments (£1) about 10.15am with the talk starting about 10.30am.

New members who have not previously attended a new members meeting are invited to a short meeting after the main meeting. Please let the chair know if you can attend. u3aselchair@gmail.com
